Mining sector's failure to innovate opens door to outside takeovers, former executive warns

Former Anglo American executive Mark Cutifani warned that major mining companies risk being acquired by outsiders if they fail to accelerate technological innovation and development.

Major mining producers are failing to develop the technologies needed to address increasingly complex operational conditions, leaving them vulnerable to acquisitions by companies outside the sector. Speaking at the International Mining and Resources Conference in Sydney, former Anglo American executive Mark Cutifani warned that the industry is not innovating quickly enough to overcome deepening deposits, lengthy permitting delays, and dwindling resource replacement. He noted that mines are getting an average of forty meters deeper each year, while permitting new projects can take up to two decades.

Cutifani argued that the lack of technological advancement means operators are struggling to replace the resources they extract. He projected that in ten years, average operations will be four hundred to five hundred meters deeper, and the industry is currently not prepared to handle the complexities associated with those depths. The warning raises significant questions about whether major producers can sustain mineral supplies as deposits become harder to access, potentially prompting outside entities to step in and acquire established mining operations.

The innovation deficit has been a persistent issue for more than a decade, according to Cutifani, who recalled similar conversations from sixteen years ago. During his tenure at Anglo American, he pushed for technological improvements through a program focused on enhancing safety, productivity, and sustainability. While acknowledging the constant need to balance immediate operational improvements with longer-term research and development, he cautioned that major producers remain too focused on short-term gains at the expense of game-changing innovation projects.
